While you may think some people must have lucked out and were simply blessed with beautiful teeth, they probably put more effort into that “effortless smile” than you know. But believe it or not it actually doesn’t require too much heavy lifting to significantly improve your oral health, as a few small and simple changes to your eating tendencies and your dental habits can make a huge impact on your grin.
Healthy Teeth Start Here
Most of these tips for healthy teeth are probably pretty familiar, but it never hurts to refresh your memory. Plus, there may be a few new ones in this list that you’ve never come across in the past.
- Go See Your Dentist – No, it doesn’t usually make for a fun date but a regular visit to the dentist can help prevent a long list of potential future problems. Catching issues early will save you time and money, as a small filling is a heck of lot less painful that a root canal (both financially and physically).
- Watch What You Eat (And Drink) – Those sugary snacks, sodas, and sports drinks wreak havoc on your tooth enamel, the thin outer layer on your teeth that protects the more sensitive inner layers from damage. Unlike your skin or your bones, your tooth enamel doesn’t regenerate. In other words, once it’s gone – it’s gone.
If you must have something to satisfy your sweet tooth, you’re much better off substituting the candy bar with a serving of plain yogurt or, even better, an apple. It’ll actually help scrub the teeth and gums clean after a meal, and also helps rinse away leftover bits of food.
3) Brushing And Flossing Still Rules – Yes, you’ve heard it since you were a child but it still rings true today. Though it’s not always convenient to do, brushing your teeth at least twice a day (ideally one of those times is right before bed) and flossing after meals is probably the most effective method to maintain healthy teeth for a lifetime. It only takes a few minutes and will undoubtedly pay dividends in the long run. Take care of your teeth and they will take care of you!
