When it comes to your food choices, sometimes it’s hard to remember that fat is not always the enemy. Yes, there are definitely some bad fats out there, but, believe it or not, there are also plenty of healthy, beneficial fats out there, too – fats you should be actively trying to incorporate into your diet plan. Ongoing studies have shown that because of these different types of fats, many of the foods once thought of as strictly off limits are actually beneficial for you.
Healthy Fats Are Out There – If You Know Where To Look
One of the tastiest and most versatile healthy-fat foods you can buy is the avocado. They are a fruit, of course, but instead of the high amount of carbs associated with most fruits, avocados are actually high fat. The difference being that avocado fat calories come from monounsaturated fat, which actually helps lower bad (LDL) cholesterol and boost your good (HDL) cholesterol. Plus, they are loaded with fiber and potassium, too
Oily fish like tuna, salmon, and trout fall into the healthy fats food category, as well. They’re an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids (which also help lower triglycerides), not to mention the protein they provide. One important thing to remember, though: you must grill, steam, or broil fish as deep-frying negates pretty much everything good about eating it.
Plenty of healthy fats in nuts and chia seeds, too. Almost any nut will do, including almonds and walnuts. They’re also great sources of vitamin E and magnesium, as well. Chia seeds, if you haven’t heard yet, are considered one of the latest super foods out there. Not only do they have omega-3 fatty acids to fight cholesterol, they also have lots of fiber and essential minerals.
Basically, the bottom line is that while there definitely some undesirable fats that you should attempt to minimize in your diet, there are also some healthy fats you need to be actively seeking out and including on your plate. Remember – not all fats are bad!
