The holidays are upon us, and with them come the endless parade of diet busters like mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, decadent desserts, and tempting cocktails. So what’s a healthy dieter to do during this time of temptation? Here are some suggestions to keep you – and your waistline – in check:
Start with a plan
Try to find a balance between holiday social events and healthy activities like trips to the gym or yoga. On those nights when you will be attending a social affair, plan to eat a healthy breakfast and late lunch so you won’t be as hungry and tempted to overindulge later in the evening.
After all, holiday get-togethers are all about spending time with friends and family. Focus on them, rather than the food tables surrounding you. Grab a sparkling water, or garnish your water with a twist, and wait at least 30 minutes before grabbing a plate. This gives you time to relax, and forget about the food. You may find yourself so deep in conversation, you forget all about those mini-cheesecakes.
Go easy on the alcohol
If you do want a cocktail to unwind, remember that mixed drinks can be loaded with sugar, and one glass of wine has over 100 calories. Even the lighter beer alternatives can contain almost 100 calories per bottle. By alternating a glass of water or seltzer between drinks, you can better moderate your intake, cut calories, and stay hydrated.
Navigate the buffet
When sampling from the food table, try to stick to the vegetables, fruits and cheeses, and go easy on the cheesy dips, processed foods, and sweets. Don’t fill your plate with a little bit of everything. Instead, choose a few things you absolutely love or want to try. You can always go back for more, but chances are you’ll be full before returning to refill that plate.
Finally, there’s always tomorrow to get back on track and focus on a healthy diet. Don’t beat yourself up over a few extra calories.
